Who’s who? Well, one’s a chef and the other’s a church dean

Inclusion in Who’s Who, a reference book containing more than 33,000 autobiographical entries of some of the most famous, most powerful and most influential people in the world, is by invitation only.

And the Dean of Jersey, the Very Rev Michael Keirle (55), along with Mr Rankin (45), the former chef director at the Ormer Jersey restaurant in Don Street, are featured in what is the 170th edition.

The French president, Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick as well as award-winning wine writer and television personality, Oz Clarke, also make their first appearance in Who’s Who 2018.

A spokeswoman for Who’s Who said: ‘We have some automatic inclusions, including high church movements. Mr Keirle is included because of his appointment to the post of Dean of Jersey. Mr Rankin has also been included because of his status as a chef.’

Mr Rankin became one of the most high-profile figures in Jersey’s fine-dining scene after he moved to the Island in the 1990s.

The chef, who has appeared in numerous TV shows, including Master Chef, began his Jersey career at Longueville Manor, before leaving in 2003 for Bohemia. In 2013 he joined the Ormer venture and in October it was announced that the Jersey Ormer restaurant had retained its coveted Michelin star for the fifth consecutive year. Last month it was reported that Mr Rankin would no longer play any role in any of Jersey’s Ormer businesses.

Mr Rankin currently works at Ormer Mayfair at Flemings Mayfair Hotel in London, which is part of a separate business agreement to Jersey’s Ormer restaurant.

Before his appointment in the summer as the Dean of Jersey, Mr Keirle lived in Guernsey for 14 years, where he served as Guernsey’s Vice-Dean and, for a short period, Acting Dean. Everyone in Who’s Who is invited to compile his or her own entry and Mr Rankin sums up his life and work in just ten lines, while the Dean explains his life in nine lines, which is seven fewer than the 16-line entry of Pope Francis, 11 lines fewer than the 20-line entry of the Dalai Lama and 13 lines fewer than the 22-line entry of US President Donald Trump.

Shaun Rankin and Mr Keirle will remain in Who’s Who until they die, when they will be automatically transferred to Who’s Who’s sister publication, Who Was Who.

  • The 2018 edition of Who’s Who was published this week by A & C Black and costs £310.
