Early Christmas morning fireworks anger neighbours

Several reports were made to the States police after families were woken up shortly after midnight by a series of explosions.

A spokeswoman for the force said: ‘We did respond to some reports of some fireworks being let off at around 12.10 am on 25 December in the area of Windsor Road.

‘No persons have been reported and no further inquiries are anticipated. It was not an organised display.’

James Bevis, of Starburst Fireworks, said he had ‘no idea’ who was behind the private display but pointed out that they had not broken the law.

‘I think it was a stupid thing to do at that time of night but it was perfectly legal for them to do it.

‘The only thing you could get them on was possibly a loose breach of the peace charge, but the fireworks will be gone so they won’t be able to prove who it was,’ he said.

A number of Islanders reacted angrily on Facebook to the disturbance, which woke up children.

‘Well done to whoever’s letting off fireworks in town at this time of night.

‘Whole house woken up… apologies if it’s something for charity, but midnight Christmas Eve… really,’ said Louise Harris on the Jersey Ask! Advise! Advertise! page.

Rochelle Olley said that her children were woken up by the display. ‘The idiots are ruining Christmas for little kids everywhere,’ she said.

Meanwhile Natasha Bizouarn said: ‘I live on Midvale Road and it sounded like they were going off in my living room.’

Tracey Philips added: ‘… spoiling it for children fast asleep waiting for Santa and poor parents having to put up with them waking up. What a selfish thing to do.’
