Missing cat reunited with its owners – after eight years

Mickey, a ginger shorthair who is now aged 12, turned up this week after being taken to a local animal charity as a stray that had been eating food put out for hedgehogs.

The Cat Action Trust 1977 Jersey Branch was able to scan him, find a microchip and contact his surprised owners.

‘The lady who had found him actually knew the owner. Well, that’s Jersey for you isn’t it,’ said Jean Falk, who runs the charity.

‘I phoned then and said I have got your cat and there was a big silence.’

She added: ‘It was quite sweet when they picked him up as he did seem to recognise them.’

Mickey, who went missing from St John’s Village and was found near the Living Legend in St Peter, went straight for a check-up with his vet and was given a clean bill of health – another surprise given that it appears that he had not had any medical attention since he went missing.

And while the mystery of Mickey the missing cat has a happy ending, the family are no closer to knowing where he has been – or who, if anyone, he has been with – for the past eight years.

She added: ‘I would absolutely say every single cat should be microchipped. My life and that of the Animals’ Shelter would be so much easier.

‘There are quite a few cats missing and this case gives hope to all those people. I always tell them they are out there somewhere and unless you have actually found a body and you know it is your cat, then your cat is out there and it will turn up. Sometimes you just have to be patient.’

The Harvey family, who own Mickey, moved from Beauport to a house near St John’s Church in 2010 and it was not long after that Mickey went out one day and did not return.

Michelle Harvey – mother to Jack and Ella and wife to Phil – explained how she first discovered that her long-lost companion had been found. She said: ‘My husband took a call from Jean, who was with the lady who found her and then he phoned me and said, “You will not believe what has just happened”.

‘I have had quite a lot of bad news recently, so I thought, “Oh God, what now?” But he then told me that our cat had been found after eight years missing – that is something I never expected to hear.’

She added: ‘I went to go and pick him up from Jean, I have never met her before but I gave her a big hug and went and saw Mickey in her kitchen – he came straight up to me and I picked him up.’

Mickey, who is now relatively underweight, will spend the next six weeks recovering at his home in St John before being allowed out again.
