School buys bikes to tempt students away from their computer screens

The 20 new bicycles were bought with money raised at various fundraising events organised by the Parent and Staff Association at FCJ Primary School in St Saviour.

Head teacher Donna Lenzi explained that the new bicycles were part of a wider initiative that she hoped would encourage children to go outside more.

She added that she also hoped that the scheme would educate their parents about the dangers associated with certain online games on phones and the computer consoles.

Ms Lenzi said: ‘The amount of time children spend on their phones and computers is a growing concern for some of our parents.

‘Last week we had PC Jo Carter [a dedicated school liaison officer] in to deliver an e-safety meeting to our parents. Over 100 parents turned up to the meeting. She spoke about the dangers of gaming and of children being keen to play on their PlayStations.

‘By purchasing the bicycles we hope to encourage children to get off their computers and out of the house to improve their overall well-being.

‘A lot of these games can be too adult for children and [playing games] keeps them indoors too much. We felt it was really important for parents to get a comprehensive understanding of the potential dangers involved.

‘We intend to teach our Year 5 and 6 pupils to be confident riders and to start a cycle proficiency certificate programme. We have organised some of our staff to be trained to run the course so they can deliver it to our children,’ she added.
