Extra seven weeks for man already serving jail sentence

Scott Leonard Charles Furlong (33), of HMP La Moye, threw a brick through the glass panel of the main entrance at the recently refurbished high-rise flats at Windsor Court in Windsor Road in the early hours of 11 November last year.

He committed the offence just days before being jailed for an unrelated breach of probation and community service orders.

Centenier Philip Coffey said that Furlong went to the flats at about 3 am having received a phone call from his ex-partner saying there was an issue in her flat.

The court heard that he threw the brick through the front door panel, causing the glass to smash and the locked entrance doors to open.

Furlong then went to the flat rented by his ex partner. However, the court heard that the ex-partner and another person had already gone but Furlong stayed there overnight.

The property is owned by Andium Homes and the social housing provider made a claim seeking £767 in compensation for the damage. However, the Magistrate, Bridget Shaw said that there was little likelihood of Furlong paying for the damage. As a result, she ordered that he serve a three-week period of custody in default.

The Centenier said that the defendant had been drinking at St James Wine Bar earlier in the evening and had been involved in an incident at Minden Place afterwards but no further action was being taken on that offence.

In sentencing him to four weeks for causing malicious damage, Mrs Shaw said: ‘The damage to the glass was an unjustified action carried out while you were drunk and it costs someone else money to put it right. That is money that could have been used for other purposes.’ Furlong was sentenced to six months in prison in November for breaching the terms of probation and community service orders. The sentence was imposed after he admitted being behind the wheel of a car while he was twice the legal drink-drive limit.

The offence was committed in the Holme Grown car park on 22 July, when the defendant was in a white Renault Master van. An intoximeter reading taken at police headquarters showed that Furlong had 70 mcg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath. The legal limit is 35 mcg.
