Sates to debate draft laws to help with Brexit changes

External Relations Minister Sir Philip Bailhache has lodged draft legislation, which, if passed, would allow ministers to quickly amend laws which need to be changed because of Brexit and where necessary convert EU law to ‘domestic law’.

Also during public business, proposals to lower the threshold for sickness benefit, lodged by Deputy Geoff Southern, and to allow the Petty Debts Court to handle bigger claims, lodged by Chief Minister Ian Gorst, are due to be debated.

During States questions, Deputy Russell Labey is due to ask Home Affairs Minister Kristina Moore whether action is being taken to bring Jersey’s gun control laws into line with the UK’s, which were toughened following the Dunblane tragedy.

Deputy Mike Higgins is due to ask how many complaints of ‘alleged corruption’ in the public sector have been made to the Chief Minister since the beginning of his term of office. And Deputy Montfort Tadier is due to ask how many concessionary bus passes have been issued to disabled Islanders since a new scheme was introduced last year.

Treasury Minister Alan Maclean and Environment Minister Steve Luce are both due to be grilled for 15 minutes each during questions without notice.
