£195 fine for out-of-date disc and speeding

John Morrison (26), of Belmont Road, admitted failing to display the correct disc on Victoria Avenue while driving a black Mini Cooper on 28 June last year.

Centenier Peter Garrett said that the defendant was asked in writing to appear at parish hall inquiries on three dates but did not attend. In November he attended and was given a £50 fine and told he had until 5 January to pay but he did not do so.

The Centenier said that on the day the offence was committed an honorary police officer saw that the insurance disc of the Mini driven by the defendant had expired. However, Morrison said that the disc was a temporary one of the kind sent out when a new insurance policy was issued.

‘I just forgot to put in the replacement,’ he said.

The speeding offence was committed on Tuesday 26 December, when the defendant was caught travelling at 43 mph on Route de St Aubin.

He said that he was using his aunt’s car, as he was driving family around on Boxing Day, and it was more powerful than his own, so he did not realise the speed he was doing.

In sentencing, Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris said: ‘I accept that you were not trying to evade responsibility for paying for insurance, as you had bought a policy.’
