Post-Brexit ties with UK

Last week, the EU tabled a draft withdrawal agreement setting out what it hopes the terms of Brexit will be, in which it indicated that the ‘territorial scope’ of the UK would include the Channel Islands.

The draft agreement included the EU’s proposals for new post-Brexit trade, immigration and customs arrangements with the UK. The British government is very unlikely to agree to the terms as they stand, however.

An External Relations spokesman confirmed that the post-Brexit arrangements for Jersey should be covered by a final form of such an agreement.

‘The Government of Jersey were briefed on the publication of the EU draft withdrawal agreement by officials from the UK government,’ he said.

‘The UK government have been clear that they wish the Crown Dependencies, including Jersey, to be included in the [Brexit] implementation period and covered by the withdrawal agreement. We are in complete support of these objectives.

‘We are in continued positive dialogue with the UK government to ensure that Jersey’s Brexit interests are understood and appropriately represented in the negotiations.’
