Cost of posting a letter to rise

From 31 March the price of a local stamp will increase from 49p to 50p and the cost of posting a letter to the UK, the other islands and the Isle of Man will rise by 2p to 65p.

Jersey Post says the price changes are largely due to significant increases imposed by other postal operators for handling and delivering larger items and parcels, and the continuing decline in mail volumes.

The number of letters posted is expected to fall by eight per cent this year, while delivery rounds are extended as more homes are built.

A spokesman said: ‘If Jersey Post is to offer a sustainable post office for the long-term without the need for government subsidy, its own rates must be increased in order to cover the rising processing and conveyance costs passed on by these partners.’

The cost of posting a letter to Europe is also to rise from 73p to 76p, with stamps for international destinations increasing by 4p to 94p per 100g item of mail.

Niall McClure, Jersey Post’s managing director said: ‘We have worked hard to keep this year’s increases below RPI wherever possible, but as an organisation we continue to face a number

of major external challenges.

‘In order to support our customers, for the sixth consecutive year, we are committed to offering discounted postage rates at Christmas to ensure Islanders can keep in touch with family and friends for less at this important time of year.’
