Skin cancer charity urges public to sign up for mole-checking clinic

The Donna Annand Melanoma Trust hopes to see about 140 people at the clinic, which is to be held at L’Horizon Beach Hotel on Sunday 22 April.

Jersey doctors, along with UK dermatologists Dr Stephen Hayes and Dr Catriona Henderson, will be giving their time to examine Islanders’ moles and lesions.

Charity committee member Rosemary Le Saint, whose daughter Donna Annand died from malignant melanoma, said: ‘It’s the early detection of skin cancer and melanoma which saves lives. You have your blood pressure checked once a year, you should have your skin checked too.’

Registration is essential for the clinic, which costs £10 and is due to run between 10 am and 2 pm.

Jersey has been described as the skin-cancer capital of Britain due to the high number of Islanders who are diagnosed with malignant melanoma – the most dangerous form of skin cancer – each year.

The charity, which was set up in memory of Mrs Annand, who died aged 29 in 2011, aims to protect against skin cancer and promote the early detection of melanoma in the Channel Islands.
