McLinton rules out return

St Saviour No 1 Deputy Peter McLinton, who will be stepping down from office after three-and-a-half years in the role, has called on the next States Assembly to ‘move forward with less cynicism’ and ‘more trust of the facts’.

He has urged Islanders, particularly those from under-represented groups, to put themselves forward in the forthcoming election.

‘Being a Member of the Assembly is an incredible experience and it is something I would urge everyone to be a part of,’ he said.

‘The Assembly needs to be truly representative of our society and it is with this in mind that I would urge all Islanders, particularly from under-represented groups – women, disabled, non-British nationals etc – to step up and put themselves forward in the forthcoming elections.

‘I believe the Assembly must be a blend of experience and fresh new blood in order to function well.’

Deputy McLinton added that it had been an ‘absolute honour’ to have served in the Assembly.

‘I have met so many amazing people, learnt so much which would otherwise have been invisible to me and I have taken part in some of the most important debates this Island has ever seen, the outcome of which I hope will steer Jersey toward a brighter, better, more inclusive and safer future for all,’ he added.

Deputy McClinton said he intended to continue helping Islanders away from politics.

‘He added: ‘To all the new and old Members of the next Assembly, I urge you to move forward with less cynicism, more trust of the facts and remember the Assembly exists for the people and you are their representative, their equal, their servant.’
