Sell finance building to fund town regeneration, says Chief Minister

During a Corporate Service Scrutiny Panel hearing, Senator Gorst said there was interest in the building and that he was of the opinion the Jersey Development Company should be looking to sell it.

The centre was officially opened just under a year ago.

When asked about the regeneration of St Helier – which was outlined as one of the government’s core priorities in the Strategic Plan – Senator Gorst said the JDC needed to show they were paying dividend to assist the parish.

He said: ‘There have been improvements in St Helier [during the last term of office]. The States agreed that we would extend the Town Park, there have been road improvements and private sector regeneration.

‘I, having spoken to the JDC, have made it quite clear to them that they need to ensure they are showing that they are giving dividend back to town.

‘I know we have disagreed on the finance centre. There is interest in the building that is 90 per cent occupied. I am of the view that they should make that sale.’
