Playtime gets a brighter future as the park reopens

The equipment in the toddlers’ play area in Coronation Park, also known as Millbrook Park, has been replaced with new equipment which is designed for children aged between three and six.

Work to replace the old equipment – which was almost 30 years old – began in early February and the play area remained closed during the refit.

However, pupils from Bel Royal School got to try out the new equipment yesterday when the park was reopened in time for the Easter holidays by Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel and St Lawrence Constable Wendy Mezbourian.

The announcement in January that the playground by the park’s kiosk was to get a new surface and new equipment met with a mixed reaction from regular users.

Although some said they were excited by the new design, others called it ‘ugly’ and outdated.

Infrastructure said the new ‘bright-look equipment’ conforms to current design and safety standards.

As well as equipment suitable for three to six year olds there are also some cradle swings and rockers in the play area which are suitable for younger children. And a lot of the equipment has been designed to allow children with special needs to play alongside able-bodied children, such as a roundabout which is suitable for wheelchairs.

Deputy Noel said: ‘This is a fabulous play area for little children. It’s bright and current with equipment which is safe but also exciting, challenging and innovative. It’s going to give hours of enjoyment to a lot of youngsters who’ll want to come back again and again.’
