Parking charges to rise

Parking charges to rise

From 3 April the cost of parking will go up by 4p to 82p per hour, with the increase made up of a 2.15 per cent inflation rise and three per cent to account for rates costs.

In a move expected to cost the States around £900,000 a year, St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft successfully proposed that the States pay rates on its property, including the Island’s multi-storey and surface car parks.

The parking charge rise means that a four-unit paycard will go up to £3.28, a ten-unit uniticket to £8.20 and a monthly season ticket to £132.40.

Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel said the inflationary part of the rise was lower than the 2.5 per cent recommended States rate.

‘This is a bigger increase than usual because we have had to pass on the rates cost. We have, however, not passed on the full cost of inflation,’ he said.

In addition, the department says that Jersey Car Parking, the standalone trading operation of the States, has had to fund increases in staff costs and maintenance, all from parking charges.
