But anyone who is tired of travelling in a traditional mode of transport can now place a bid on what is believed to be the Island’s only tuk-tuk rickshaw – although it may need some alterations to make it legal to drive on Jersey’s roads.

The three-wheeled vehicle is due to go under the hammer at Glencoe Auction Rooms at 11 am on Wednesday.

Simon Drieu, principal of Simon Drieu and Co auctioneers, said: ‘It’s the first one I’ve seen here. I’ve sold all modes of transport but never a tuk-tuk.

‘It came in from a gentleman who purchased it with the view to renovate it but he hasn’t had the time. He thought he would put it to sale and hopefully someone will be able to renovate it.’

Mr Drieu said that the tuk-tuk originated from somewhere in the East before it found itself in the UK and then Jersey.

‘I believe it was some type of taxi vehicle,’ he said. ‘I think it was in one of the seaside resorts in the UK and was used in the tourism industry.’

He added that the tuk-tuk would make an ideal project for people who like DIY. ‘It is in surprisingly good condition,’ Mr Drieu said. ‘It does need a little bit of work doing to it. There’s no reserve price – the guy wants someone to buy it who will enjoy it and do it up.’
