St Andrew’s Church bells are back on time

The bells at St Andrew’s Church in First Tower recently inexplicably began ringing around seven minutes ahead of the hour, every hour.

Danneka Ramage (27), who lives near to the church, said: ‘It was a little confusing as I could hear them in my garden and I always thought I was late collecting my son from school – he goes to First Tower. And at night I kept thinking I was missing the start of the soaps because they were going off around seven minutes to the hour.’

Stephen Lamb, St Andrew’s Church centre manager, said the issue had been brought to the church’s attention a few weeks ago, however they were not sure of how the bells came to be out of sync.

He added that someone had even suggested that the recent spell of bad weather could have been the reason for the early bell chimes, but no one could be sure.

Mr Lamb said: ‘I can confirm the clock is working perfectly now and is going off bang on time again. We stopped the clock at 8 pm on Friday night just gone and restarted it again on Saturday morning.

‘We had a clock specialist come in over the weekend and unfortunately they were not able to say how it happened but we do send our apologies to anyone who found it confusing over the last few weeks. Thankfully it is working properly again.’
