Hope for fair wind and warm sunshine for the boat show

The forecast will be particularly welcomed by organisers of the Barclays Jersey Boat Show, which is due to take place from Saturday to Monday in and around the St Helier Marina and Weighbridge.

Last year’s event was attended by around 30,000 people, and there was blazing hot sunshine on the first day but then two days of heavy rain.

However, this year the weather is expected to be more settled.

Met Office forecaster Adrienne Le Maistre said there was still some uncertainty about how much sunshine there would be on Saturday but that the whole bank holiday weekend was currently looking warm and dry.

‘There may be a bit of cloud and a bit of sea fog on Saturday,’ she said. ‘We are not entirely sure how that is going to pan out yet. But Sunday and Monday are looking brighter and sunny. It doesn’t look like there is going to be an awful lot of wind and we are probably looking at temperatures towards 17°C to 18°C.’

The usual temperature for this time of year is between 15°C and 17°C.

The forecast of settled weather comes after a number of days of rain and cooler than average temperatures. On Monday the highest temperature recorded was 10.7°C.

Meanwhile, boat show organisers are busy making final preparations for the event, which will be open daily from 10 am until 5 pm.

Royal Navy ship HMS Mersey is due to arrive on Friday morning and will berth alongside the Albert Pier, where it will be open to the public between 11 am and 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

It will be joined by two visiting university training ships, HMS Smiter and HMS Ranger, as well as offshore raiding crafts.

A military village will be set up at the Weighbridge, pontoons in the marina will have dozens of vessels open to the public, including super-yachts, the Flybe Outdoor and Active Zone will run a busy programme of activities on and off the water from the Albert Pier and a children’s play zone will run by the Steam Clock.

There will also be entertainment on the main stage, including appearances from a number of local bands and a performance from a jazz contingent from the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Commando Training Centre in Lympstone, Devon.

The event, which this year is raising money for the Jersey branch of the Royal British Legion, will also feature daily parachute displays.
