Islanders donated everything from beans to tuna and soup to chickpeas for the event at West’s Centre yesterday, with 600 more tins collected this year compared to last.

In the run-up to the event collections were also held at the Island’s schools, while a number of companies also donated tins. Almost 2,000 tins were collected at the St Helier and St Peter Grand Marché Co-ops.

Richard Robins, who has been a trustee at the Shelter Trust for five years, said: ‘The public have been very generous. This is our tenth year. I think it is probably a record.

‘Shelter Trust have got four hostels in St Helier. We have to do three meals a day for up to 100 people. These will help us to supplement our food costs.

‘We are also getting a lot more people who will come to us for food parcels. These tins will help them. In the past couple of years we’ve noticed more people coming to the door asking for help. We have about 30 people a week.’
