Matthew Davenport-Brown (42), of Gloucester Street, pleaded guilty to having no insurance from 30 January until 10 April 2018.

In sentencing, the Magistrate, Bridget Shaw, said: ‘Lots of people have busy lives, but you have to stay on top of the paperwork and it has to be up to date all of the time.’

St Mary Centenier John Alcock said that the defendant, from New Zealand, was stopped in a road check on La Verte Rue on 5 April in a black Ford Fiesta and an honorary police officer noticed that the windscreen insurance disc had expired on 29 January.

Mrs Shaw said that there was an aggravating factor in that he had a child as a passenger in his car at the time he was stopped.

The court was told that the former Jersey RFC rugby player was warned to appear at a parish hall inquiry and that when he did produce an insurance document, it was noticed that it did not come into effect until 11 April.

Advocate Howard Sharp, defending, said: ‘I accept that there was no insurance during the period from January to April. He was busy but is not putting this forward as an excuse. This is an unfortunate oversight from a man of good character.’

Mrs Shaw said that the court took driving without insurance seriously and particularly when driving with a child in the car.

‘Had you been in an accident you would not have been covered by insurance,’ she said.
