Rise in bombs found on the Island’s shores

Stuart Elliott, who was called to the beach after the live 81 mm French mortar bombs were uncovered close to the low water mark, said that it was ‘unusual’ to find three in close proximity.

Mr Elliott safely detonated the bombs with a small charge after burying them at the low water mark on Friday.

‘That was the 31st item we have destroyed this year,’ he said. ‘We’ve had everything from small shells to mortar bombs and large bombs.’

Mr Elliott added that in recent years there had been an increase in the number of explosives being discovered.

‘It was dying down a bit,’ he said. ‘We were getting 20 to 30 about five years ago but it has started to rise as there’s more interest now in metal detectoring.’

He added that an increase in construction work in Jersey had also led to more bombs being unearthed.

And Mr Elliott warned Islanders to be wary of items they may uncover on the beach or fields.

‘With a lot of these things it’s not always obvious what they are,’ he said. ‘Treat anything you find with suspicion, don’t touch it or move it, mark its location and give the police a call as soon as possible.’
