The information includes the average wait for a first appointment with hospital departments, as well as the average waiting time for a procedure or operation across different speciality units.

According to the data – which is due to be updated by the first working day of each month, one month in arrears – the department with the longest wait for a first appointment in June was the community dental health service at 55 weeks. This was an increase from 46 weeks the previous month.

Meanwhile, the orthodontics department slashed its average waiting time from 31 weeks in May to 12 in June.

With regards to procedures and operations, ophthalmology had the longest average waiting time in June compared to the other departments at 18 weeks.

For the same month, general medicine had the shortest average wait with one week.

The publication of the data follows a pledge made by Health Minister Richard Renouf at the first regular sitting of the new States Assembly. Deputy Renouf said: ‘I want to be open about the pressures facing our hospital services and believe strongly in regularly publishing information on average waiting times.

‘There are considerable variations in the average time an Islander is likely to have to wait for their appointment or procedure, but it is important to say that urgent cases are always prioritised. I and my colleagues in the department are working to reduce delays and improve patients’ experience of hospital services.’
