Alleged victim questioned in rape and assault trial

As the trial of Jason Mark Le Chevere entered its second day, the first of the two alleged victims – both of whom are minors – gave evidence by live video link.

Mr Le Chevere denies 11 counts of indecent assault and two counts of rape.

The court heard earlier in the trial that the allegations against him are of the ‘most serious kind’.

Crossing-examining the girl about her allegations yesterday, Advocate Ian Jones, defending, asked her if she was making up her claims about the alleged sexual assaults.

The alleged victim denied this.

‘I wish I could say I was making up the abuse,’ she said. ‘I cannot be touched by a male because of him.’

Advocate Jones said that, according to the defendant, ‘none of this ever happened’.

‘He’s a liar,’ replied the girl, who was visibly distressed through most of the questioning and had to take a number of breaks.

The advocate also asked the girl about an earlier allegation of sexual abuse she had made against another individual.

She said that she was very young and confused at the time and did not want to say who was really hurting her.

Due to the young age of the two alleged victims, the majority of their evidence in the trial will be given in the form of video interviews with police, shown to the jurors, Crown Advocate Simon Thomas explained at the start of the proceedings.

Neither victim will appear in the court, other than by video link.

The jury of six women and six men also saw videos of police interviews with the second alleged victim yesterday.

The girl told police officers details of an incident where she claims Mr Le Chevere raped her.

Commissioner Sir John Saunders, who is presiding over the case, allowed the jury to have transcripts to better follow the evidence as the audio was difficult to hear.

Sir John explained to the jurors that these needed to be handed back at the end of the session.

The trial continues.
