Fort access a priority, says Chief Minister

Concerns have been growing over the future of Fort Regent following health scares involving asbestos and Legionella bacteria, while other areas of the centre have become increasingly run-down.

Chief Minister John Le Fondré has said the future of the Fort remains a top priority and that he was looking to bring together a team of ministers and civil servants to create an action plan for the centre.

‘We don’t need another review on Fort Regent,’ he said. ‘We have had enough reviews over the years.

‘Now we need the high-level stuff. We need the relevant ministers to come together and we need to decide what we want to see up there and how we go about creating that.’

Assistant Economic Development Minister Steve Pallett, who has responsibility for sport, has previously suggested that the States might have to close the building unless urgent plans – and funds – are put in place to save the Fort.

Senator Le Fondré added that meetings were being planned for January to begin the process of developing plans for Fort Regent but did admit that funding across the States departments was going to be tight next year.

He said: ‘We will have to get some dedicated people doing it and getting it going. In my view, we need two work streams.

‘One is the future of the Fort and the types of facilities we want to see there. The second is about access.

‘Can we get the Snow Hill entrance sorted out?

‘We know access is an issue and we need to make sure that people can get there.’
