Festive drink-driving up – but not in all parishes

Both the States and honorary police forces increased their presence across the Island during Christmas, carrying out a number of roadside checks.

But despite a large number of vehicles being stopped, some parishes reported not catching a single person driving over the legal alcohol limit.

St Peter Centenier John Camara said his officers went out a number of times during the festive season and breath-tested up to 100 motorists.

However, he said he was ‘over the moon’ that none had been found to be breaking the law.

‘Not one was caught drink-driving and the majority of issues were just for faulty lights. I am very happy,’ he said. ‘That is what I was hoping for, but Christmas is normally a time when some people decide to take chances.’

During a single road check in St Saviour on 17 December, St Saviour’s honorary police stopped a total of 242 vehicles.

A total of 17 received advice to fix faulty lights, nine were issued with defect notices and one vehicle was taken off the road.

However, despite three drivers being breath-tested, no one was found to be drink-driving.
