Jersey has dullest start to a year since records began – just six minutes of sun in first seven days

The Island has long been regarded as the sunniest place in the British Isles, with average annual sunshine records regularly beating the south coast of England.

But this year has been unusually dull, with a thick layer of cloud trapped under an area of high pressure.

The Island’s rather bleak start to the new year was so remarkable that it was even featured on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme on Tuesday.

Some sunshine was expected on Tuesday, but the generally cloudy conditions are likely to return for much of the rest of the working week.
