Fisherman in French court over ‘illegal’ scallop catch

According to French media, the man – referred to as Mr Laurent – landed the scallops in Brittany. He claimed he had authorisation to fish for the species from Jersey authorities.

However, the court’s prosecutor argues that, under EU regulations, French fishermen cannot fish for scallops from 15 May until 30 September, regardless of whether or not they were caught within French or Jersey waters.

Proceedings are alleged to have begun against Mr Laurent after his catch appeared at a fish auction at the western Brittany town of Concarneau.

Mr Laurent’s defence advocate has disputed the accusations.

‘If he knew he was acting illegally, why would he have landed his catch in the eyes of all at the auction in Concarneau? This is what he has been doing for years without any problem,’ said the advocate.

A spokesman for the States of Jersey Fisheries and Marine Resources unit confirmed they were helping French authorities on a case involving scallops but said they were unable to comment further.

The court is due to reconvene on 15 January.
