Streets closed following damage to hospital roof

A spokesperson for Health and Community Services said: ‘Motorists and pedestrians are advised that Gloucester Street and Newgate Street is currently closed.

‘This is due to parts of the waterproofing on the roof of the Granite Block hospital needing to be checked urgently because strong winds overnight have caused parts of the flashing on the granite block of the hospital to loosen.

‘Engineers are currently working on site to assess the situation. The rest of the Hospital is unaffected and is functioning as normal, however, patients and visitors can only access the Hospital from the Parade entrance.

‘Patriotic street car park remains open but visitors/patients will have to access the hospital via Kensington Place through to the Parade. HCS apologises for any inconvenience caused. Updates will be given as soon as possible.’

Any patients with appointments at the breast/colorectal clinic in Newgate Street are being asked to come to the Hospital’s outpatient department instead.

The dental department in Newgate Street is unaffected with patients able to access the building via the back door. Anyone who is unable to get to a hospital appointment today is being reassured that they will have their appointment re-booked.

The Hospital remains open and operational but anyone looking to visit a relative is being asked to do so later on, if it is non-urgent.
