£400K to upgrade pumping station

Infrastructure Minister Kevin Lewis signed three ministerial decisions this week awarding contracts to three different UK-based companies who will be involved in the project.

The pumping station takes sewage from both
the east and the west of Jersey before transferring it to Bellozanne for treatment.

According to the decision, the money will also be spent upgrading the plant’s odour-control system, with Wales-based Air-Water Treatment Ltd being paid £104,490 to carry out the works.

A spokesman for the Growth, Housing and Environment Department said: ‘This ministerial decision is for new equipment for the First Tower pumping station.

‘This includes new pumps for the new sewage treatment works so that it can deliver more flow to allow for the increasing population.

‘The existing odour-control unit has come to the end of its life and needs to be replaced; the new unit will reduce odour coming from the pumping station.’

Xylem Water Solutions UK Ltd was awarded a contract worth £251,612.25 to supply and install the new pumps and £48,619.88 is being spent with Cotswold Valves Ltd, taking the overall cost to £404,722.13.

The works are due to take place at the same time as a £75 million project to upgrade the Bellozanne Sewage Treatment Plant to cope with the growing population.

According to the government, the current plant was built in 1958 to support a population around half the size of today’s.

Around 150,000 tonnes of earth has been excavated from Bellozanne Valley to create space for the new works.
