Drink-driver nearly three times over limit

Kealan Paul Hanna (22) was found ‘hiding’ in Patriotic Place after being followed from Elizabeth Lane, near Cheapside, where he had left his car, the court heard.

When he was eventually taken back to the States police headquarters his lowest breath/alcohol reading was 93mg – the legal limit for driving is 35mg. Prosecutors highlighted that the test was taken at about 5.20am, more than two hours after Hanna had first left St Brelade in his car.

Hanna, who it was heard suffers from depression, had driven from the western parish, where he had entered the home of a woman he knew and caused damage to her television and smashed a bottle of vodka during a drunken rage.

Officers tracked Hanna on CCTV as he drove from St Brelade past West Park and then to Cheapside.

The defendant admitted one count of breach of the peace, one count of drink-driving and another of driving without insurance. He was sentenced to 130 hours’ community service, handed a 12-month probation order and banned from driving for 30 months.

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris said all of Hanna’s offences were spurred by one thing: alcohol.

Advocate Luke Sette, defending, said his client had been guilty of ‘some very poor decision making’ and his drunken state amplified by antidepressant drugs.
