THE third ‘Footvolley’ tournament – which was set up during the pandemic to help bring the community together – will be held in St Aubin tomorrow.
The event, which is organised by Grainville teacher and former Muratti footballer James Scott, will take place between 6pm and 8pm at the Gunsite, with entrants competing in a game that combines elements of beach volleyball and football.
There will be 16 teams, each comprising three people, split into four groups of four. The winner from each group will move into a knockout semi-final and then a final.
Mr Scott said: ‘The idea started during Covid when we were first allowed to exercise in groups again. There was still no local football being played and the event was born out of wanting to bring the community together during a really difficult time. It is completely free and it is all about coming together and having some fun.
‘The first year started off small and then last year was really popular, with 16 teams and lots of people watching on the sea wall. We have got the same numbers again this year and I even have a few teams on the waiting list, as the spaces are completely full.’
He added: ‘The game was started in Brazil and so we have got one of the Wonky Factory DJ’s coming down to play some samba beats for everyone.’
Mr Scott has encouraged as many Islanders as possible to watch the event.
‘It is great laugh. Everyone is always up for it and there is nothing like a bit of pressure during the final when there is a good crowd watching,’ he said.
‘We have been blessed with the weather the past two years, so fingers crossed that the sun plays ball for us again this time round,’ he added.
Mr Scott said he was looking for people to sponsor the event to cover the cost of the DJ and to purchase some new volleyballs for the tournament. Anyone who is interested in offering support should email scotty_js@hotmail.com.
