CINEWORLD has said it will ask customers who take part in an online trend and cause disruption during the screening of a new film to leave.

The Minions: The Rise Of Gru, which is the most recent instalment from the Despicable Me franchise, has made national headlines in recent days after it became the subject of a new trend on social media platform Tik-Tok, where teenage boys attend the film dressed in suits – the same outfit worn by main character Gru.

As part of the ‘gentleminions’ trend, participants film themselves in the cinema copying the super villain, Gru, and and his signature hand gesture.

However, a number of cinemas in the UK have banned people from wearing suits to the screenings after some reported customers cheering, standing and clapping during the film.

A spokesperson for Cineworld said: ‘All minions are welcome in our cinemas, but any who partake in despicable behaviour will be asked to leave if they disrupt the enjoyment of others.’

Cineworld could not confirm whether any incident related to the trend had taken place in Jersey.

Last weekend, the Mallard Cinema in Guernsey was forced to stop showing the film after a number of groups following the trend were abusive towards staff, threw things across the cinema and argued with other cinema-goers.

The company has since decided to ‘tentatively’ put the film back on their screens. However, they have implemented a number of conditions to prevent the behaviour from happening again.

Customers can only book the screening in person, large groups unaccompanied by an adult are not allowed and anyone wearing a suit cannot attend.
