THE Jersey Football Association has confirmed that an investigation will take place into allegations of abuse of a visiting footballer at a Jersey Bulls’ match.

Cobham FC complained to match officials at Springfield on Saturday regarding what one of the club’s players said was racist abuse in a chant by Bulls’ supporters.

JFA chief executive David Kennedy said: ‘Discrimination and/or abusive behaviour has no place in football and all reports will be investigated thoroughly.

‘Anyone in football should be assured of an environment in which their rights, dignity and individual worth are respected and, in particular, that they are able to enjoy football without the threat of intimidation, victimisation, harassment or abuse.’

Jersey Bulls’ fan liaison officer Adie Viccars described the incident as ‘unfortunate’, adding that he did not believe there had been any element of racism.

He said: ‘A player who was laughing and joking with supporters earlier in the game has taken umbrage to a comment that was made, and you have to accept that not every comment will please everybody.

‘I don’t agree it was anything racist, but he [the Cobham player] has deemed it to be, which is unfortunate.’

Mr Viccars said he had been disappointed by some of the comments made regarding the incident, particularly on social media.

‘People who weren’t even there have come onto Twitter and made sweeping comments about the Bulls, saying the club is racist,’ he said. ‘The club has worked tirelessly since it was founded three and half years ago to create an inclusive, family-orientated environment that’s safe for people to come and enjoy football.’
