Orange wind warning issued as severe gales predicted

Jersey Met weather radar

STORMY weather, including winds that could reach force 10, has prompted an orange warning to be issued by Jersey Met.

A weather front named as Storm Mathis by MeteoFrance is scheduled to affect the Channel Islands on Thursday evening, with winds of 45 knots, or severe gale 9, and the possibility of reaching force 10 overnight.

The warning also covers the possibility of significant rainfall until 4pm on Friday, with Jersey Met urging Islanders to keep an eye on the latest forecast and the possibility that the orange warning could be upgraded to red.

The government said that all emergency services were aware and prepared, advising Islanders to secure any garden furniture or loose dustbins or anything that may blow away in high winds.

Drainage and forestry teams, Jersey Water and road clearing operatives are on standby and ready and available for any emergencies, the government has said.

Disruption to public transport has been flagged as a possibility tomorrow morning, with commuters recommended to factor this into their travel arrangements.
