SEVERE gales, with gusts of wind forecast to come close to hurricane force, have prompted a red warning to be issued by Jersey Met.
The warning came as the Island experienced increasingly strong winds through the day.
Winds of force 9, equivalent to severe gale force, were forecast, with gusts of up to 65 knots. The Beaufort Scale, which measures wind, states that winds of 64 knots or higher would be classed as hurricane force 12.
Advice for Islanders during red warnings is published on the government website, including:
– Staying indoors as much as possible.
– Not going outside to repair damage while the storm is ongoing.
– Not driving unless the journey is really necessary, and driving with care while making essential journeys.
– After a storm taking care not to touch any electrical/ telephone cables that have been blown down or are still hanging.
