Former St Helier shop could become homes

PLANS have been lodged to convert an empty shop and one-bedroom bedsit in St Helier into a three-bedroom home and one-bed flat.

If plans are approved, the former Saint Saviour Convenience Store in St Saviour’s Road would be transformed to help ‘maximise’ the area’s ‘residential potential’, according to applicant Jason Dodds.

‘The empty shop is only a relatively short distance from Grand Marché – the Co-op’s largest supermarket – and the central retail area of town, so it is clear that the loss of this small shop that hasn’t traded for two years has not affected anyone in the vicinity detrimentally,’ Mr Dodds wrote in a supporting statement.

He added: ‘The proposed development will be concentrated within the Island’s built-up area… and is also on previously developed land which is currently under-utilised.

‘This proposal makes the most efficient use of land, and optimises the density of development, so should be encouraged.’

According to Mr Dodds there have been four applications submitted to the Planning department in the last two years, which have proposed ‘to convert the shop and bedsit into a one-bedroom residential unit’.

It is a grade-three listed building, which was built in the mid-19th century.

Towards the rear of the property, the outbuildings were used as a dairy yard. During the Island’s Occupation in the Second World War the outbuildings were also used as a bicycle park by the German troops.
