TRAVELLING through Jersey Airport could soon become easier, as new baggage-screening equipment – which will ultimately remove the need for passengers to take liquids and laptops out of their luggage – is due to be installed from today.
Ports of Jersey was expecting several large items to be delivered by sizeable vehicles on Monday and advised motorists to take care on the roads to and from the Airport.
The £3 million project will introduce technology that takes clearer images of baggage, meaning travellers will eventually be able to go through security without unpacking items from their bags.
Two lanes using the new equipment are due to be in place by the end of July, and a third is expected to be ready by the middle of August, although the requirement to take liquids and laptops out of bags will stay in place for longer until staff are fully trained and the scanners completely tested.
This equipment is to become mandatory across UK airports from June 2024.
Some changes to the Airport’s layout have already been made. The information desk and bureau de change are now in the departures area, while cash machines have been moved to the entrance to the departure gates.
Head of security Maria Le Tiec said that Ports were making a ‘significant investment’ that would ‘ultimately ease the process for passengers’ but apologised for any short-term disruption.
