A MOTHER of four who lived at home until relatively recently celebrated her 100th birthday last week.

Dorothy “Dot” Birch raised a glass to her centenary with the Lieutenant-Governor, Vice-Admiral Jerry Kyd, and his wife, Dr Karen Kyd, at Corbière Phare last Friday.

Her son Jim Birch told that JEP that his mother was born in Bedford before moving to Jersey in 1948 after meeting three “Jersey girls” while making nuts, bolts and bombs for Lancaster planes during the Second World War.

Working as a nanny and a cleaner for several years, Ms Birch then met her soon-to-be husband Dougie on a blind date and married him in July 1952.

She had four children – two girls and two boys – and became a housewife in the years after her marriage.

Mr Birch said: “She’s got quite a few grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and there are even more on the way at the moment.

“She has always been very active and was at home until eight weeks ago. It was only about four years ago that she stopped playing darts with her local club.”

Mr Birch added that the visit from the Lieutenant-Governor was “very lovely” and that he was a “lovely man”.
