THE president of the Jersey Fishermen’s Association has left the role after two decades at the helm.
Don Thompson confirmed that he had stepped down at a JFA meeting earlier this week, though he noted that no immediate successor has yet been appointed.
Mr Thompson has long served as a voice for island fishermen, often representing them at a political level.
In recent years this included major debates surrounding the post-Brexit fishing rights dispute, which at its height saw a flotilla of French vessels stage a protest in St Helier Harbour.
The 69-year-old explained that, after roughly two decades in the role, his time representing Jersey’s fishing fleet had reached a natural conclusion.
He said: “It’s been a really interesting time, but it’s one of those roles that pretty much takes up your whole life.”
He added: “It’s time that some of the younger guys in the fleet started engaging more with looking after their future.”
