A 53-year-old motorist who admitted driving at 65mph along Victoria Avenue said he did not realise how fast his new Mercedes was.
Carl Martin Le Quesne committed the offence on 3 June. The road has a 40mph speed limit.
He admitted speeding when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court but told the court: “It was a new car. I didn’t realise how quick it would be.”
The Relief Magistrate, Sarah Fitz, accepted that it was Le Quesne’s first offence.
She fined him £500 and endorsed his licence, so that it will bear a record of the offence.
