MEMBERS of Jersey’s maritime community turned out in their hundreds on Monday night for a “spectacular” grand flotilla marking the RNLI’s 200th anniversary year.
The event, which was led by the RNLI all weather lifeboat, was organised by the St Helier Yacht Club and involved around 540 people across 122 boats.
This included vessels from the SHYC, the Jersey Rowing Club, the Island’s fishing community, the emergency services and Ports of Jersey as well as individual participants.
Islanders watched on from the shore as the flotilla paraded the length of St Aubin’s Bay before entering St Helier Harbour, while the Channel Islands Air Search plane flew overhead.
It was organised by the St Helier Yacht Club to mark the 200th anniversary year of the RNLI and was a chance to recognise and give thanks to the “outstanding” volunteer service provided by the crews and support staff in Jersey.
Club manager Jason Manning thanked everyone who took part.
“It was a spectacular event, absolutely superb,” he continued. “That’s our way of showing our appreciation for the RNLI and its years of service.”
