Nomination form design should be reviewed, says new St Brelade Constable

Mike Jackson was returned to the role he held between 2005 and 2011 after the court ruled not to re-run the nominations meeting to potentially allow other candidates to come forward.

Reform Jersey candidate Marilyn Carré withdrew from the election following concerns that the party declaration section of her form had not been completed before her nominators signed her paper. She said that all signatories were fully aware that she was standing as a Reform Jersey candidate.

The court ruled that Mr Jackson was the only valid candidate following Miss Carré’s withdrawal. He has now called on the design of the nomination papers to be reviewed.

He said: ‘Now that the turbulence of last week has passed and I find myself precipitated into the role of Constable of St Brelade rather more rapidly than anticipated, I would like to sincerely thank Professor Ed Sallis for his kind words and proposing me.

‘The court made a decision, after having retired to deliberate for some time, that given that I was in effect the only candidate for the one position I would be declared Connétable elect and was warned to be sworn in on 1 June.

‘Yes I’m absolutely delighted to be able to serve the parish as Constable for the next four years but I’m disappointed with the process which has had to take place and also disappointed not to have fought an election.

‘If anything can be learnt from this it is that the design of the nomination form should be reviewed and I shall make every effort to see that this occurs.

‘I now look forward to hearing parishioners’ views and acting on concerns which will inevitably arise.’

Both Mr Jackson and Deputy-elect John Young, who was unopposed in St Brelade No 1, held a special question and answer session for parishioners at St Brelade Parish Hall on Tuesday evening.
