Volleyball: Uncertain future after latest Games snub

Nicki Appleton, who has made 12 Games appearances since 1991, says participation levels could diminish further as a result of the sport’s latest snub – placing added emphasis on plans to enter the French system.

Volleyball is not due to feature in Gibraltar in 2019, meaning there will be at least a six year wait for Games action after next year’s event in Gotland.

‘I really hope not,’ said Appleton, discussing whether the lengthy gap could kill off the sport in Jersey.

‘The Island Games is our main event every two years; it’s what we always work towards so we’re desperately trying to find events to replace it. We’ve been in contact with St Malo about playing over there because going down the UK-route to play is a lot more expensive.
