Final day defeats for Jersey

Malcolm De Sousa, beaten 21-20 in two of his matches earlier this week, was unable to bounce back from the frustration of missing out on the quarter-finals, while Rachel MacDonald and Christine Grimes were second-best for large parts of their 27-8 loss to Northern Ireland.

The women’s pairs representatives did take an early 2-0 lead at Broadbeach Bowls Club, but the Irish duo picked up a five from the fifth end for an 8-3 lead and never looked back.

The Caesareans did, however, pick up three shots from the 16th – reducing the deficit to 21-8.

De Sousa was playing for pride on his final outing of Gold Coast 2018 after numerous cases of bad luck ended his hopes of reaching the knockouts, but he finished with two wins and three defeats to his name in the singles draw following a 21-16 reverse against Papua New Guinea’s Matu Bazo.
