Tackling life after the Taylor era

This will be Jersey’s fourth adventure in the competition which started in Slovenia, then Romania before being hosted in the Island last year.

There are 19 countries competing this time and Jersey, sponsored by Rathbones, have been placed in Group D with Croatia, Romania and rivals Guernsey.

The team is Charlie Griggs, Scott Gautier, Rob Hickling, Antony Harkin and Ian Furness

Player/coach Ian Furness said; ‘The team is so looking forward to this adventure in north east Europe. We’ve been training really hard and just so eager to step on court for our opening match against Romania. We have over-achieved during our first three years in the event, finishing fifth, third and third again. This year will be very tough without Nick Taylor. But that gives others opportunities to play high-class opposition.

‘Charlie Griggs will be our No 1 and has been training very hard in Paris – only last weekend he won his first regional title. Antony Harkin has improved massively over the last three months and in my opinion will be a very strong No 4.

‘No words can describe what a legend Rob Hickling is and he will never ever let the team down. And, finally, Scott Gautier is so talented, with lots of experience now, but his fitness levels at No 2 will be tested.’

On the draw, Furness added: ‘It was slightly disappointing to draw Guernsey in our group when you are looking for fresh challenges. But it’s a very winnable game and one that neither island will want to lose’.

Some of the matches will be streamed on www.etc3latvia.lv.
