A women’s football first for Jersey

Megan Wood and Holly Muirhead – both former Jersey Footballer of the Year award winners – featured for Yeovil and Chichester respectively in an FA Women’s National League South match between the sides on Sunday, which ended 3-0 to Wood and Co.

Financial struggles resulted in Yeovil dropping into the third tier of the women’s game this season, after playing Super League football in 2019/20. Wood spent last season with the club’s academy but climbed the ranks over the summer to make her debut. They have won both of their league matches and a cup fixture so far this term.

Wood said: ‘It was good to see Holly and I felt we both did well in what was a competitive game.

‘Many of the players knew about the Jersey link and although it was a celebration of Island pride we both had a job to do for our teams.

‘It was a good game, the first half was really competitive and we made it difficult for ourselves because we’ve had a strong start to the season and not conceded a goal in our previous games and we’ve now added to that.’

Jersey’s Footballer of the Year in 2017/18 and JEP Golden Boot winner the same year, Wood made her first-team debut in a 9-0 league win against Hounslow, formerly Queen’s Park Rangers, before scoring in her next game – a 7-0 cup success against Stevenage.

Full report in Wednesday’s JEP.
