Sharp claims world record number three

The World Sailing Speed Record Council mark, for a single-handed monohull up to 40 foot (Class 40), was claimed on Sunday evening aboard OceansLab in five hours five minutes and four seconds – an average speed of 9.8 knots (18.1km per hour).

Sharp started the record attempt off the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes and completed the circumnavigation to, provisionally, shatter the previous time of 6hr 29min 32sec established by Alex Alley aboard a Class 40 Pixel Flyer.

Sharp adds this to his two existing records, the crewed Around Great Britain and Ireland, and the single-handed Cowes-Dinard.

More in Tuesday’s JEP.
