Sonning seen off at death by Jersey vets

The men’s masters squad progressed into the last-eight of the national England Hockey competition after finishing 8-7 up in a shootout with Sonning HC on Sunday, having missed a chance to break the deadlock at 2-2 in normal time and seal a more comfortable victory.

Jersey – playing their home tie away as Sonning could not travel – were sent ahead by Stuart Ramskill in the first half with a short-corner conversion, before Richard Horsfall was required to pull them level at two apiece after the break.

Mark Dicker then had an opportunity to wrap up the tie before the final whistle, but the Islanders instead had to rely on ‘pot-luck’ from the spot.

They will meet Purley Walcountians at home on 9 February – providing the south-London club can make the cross-Channel journey.

‘We haven’t got a great history of winning on flicks, so it’s nice to finally get one,’ said Jersey coach James Wetherall.

‘We started strongly and had the upper hand, but then Sonning came back into it.

‘They got a good goal to start off the second half [for 2-1] but after that we bossed it. We deserved to get back on level terms and probably should have finished it in normal time.’

Discussing the last-eight clash with Purley, Wetherall said: ‘We’ve got to make sure they can come over first, but it will be good to get a good crowd at Les Quennevais and to hopefully see us into the quarter-finals.’
