Hundred-year-old bowls club under threat

The Jersey Bowling Club, which has been situated on Westmount Road in St Helier since 1912, could potentially have to make way for new hospital construction plans should it be built on the proposed People’s Park or Overdale sites.

Jean Lowery, president of the club, said it had had no assurances about its future from the States or the hospital site selection committee and believed members would be heartbroken at the thought of their club being ‘flattened’.

She added: ‘We were told that if the new hospital was to be built at Overdale, then our club would be affected, as the approach road to the new site which will be built on the hairpin by our club would be made wider to make access easier, which would mean knocking down our grounds.

‘Although there were no definites in regards to building on the People’s Park site, we were told we could still be affected.’

Lowery said in an ideal world the club would not have to be demolished and the approach road could be built lower down Westmount Road.
