An early try from a rolling maul, finished by Guy Thompson, gave the home side the lead before Ampthill replied in the final play of the half, with Austin Wallis scoring and Russell Bennett converting.
Bennett added a penalty on the resumption and when he converted Joe Goodchild’s try the game looked up at 5-17 with less than a quarter of an hour to play.
But the Reds turned up the power and claimed a second try through TJ Harris before Thompson added his second with five minutes to play.
Sam Leeming’s conversion brought the scores level, but neither side was able to find a winning score in the closing minutes.
