BOTH Jersey U16 girls and boys enjoyed comprehensive wins over their Sarnian rivals in their inter-insular matches at Les Quennevais on Saturday.

The girls were on first, winning 6-1, while the boys went one better, beating Guernsey 7-1.

Jasmine Ngima led the way for the girls, scoring a hat-trick in a match of two halves.

Jersey started nervously and Guernsey were the dominant team in the first half, easily driving through space in the Jersey midfield. However, Jersey’s defence were equal to the task and Guernsey failed to take advantage.

Then, against the run of play, Jersey were first on the scoreboard as Ngima got her first goal of the day.

Guernsey equalised to make it 1-1 at half-time but the second half saw Jersey gain control of the midfield and the lightning forward line took advantage of their link play and pace to score five more unanswered goals, including two more for Ngima and single efforts from Olivia Labesse, Grace Wetherall and Lottie James.

Perhaps the result was not a fair reflection of the game but Jersey took the match by the horns in the final quarter and came away with a great result.

In contrast, the boys dominated their match from the start with some impressive, composed play throughout. They boys settled into the new diamond formation quickly and the midfield controlled the game early on. Good team play and quick passing got the team off to a fantastic start and they were two up after ten minutes and four up after 15 minutes. By half-time it was 5-0. Guernsey gained composure into the second half and worked hard to slow the Jersey attack, even getting a goal themselves, only for Jersey to put another two past them to cap great performance with all the goals – scored by Will Hodgson (2), Sam Watling, Sam Reynolds, Eddie Rothwell, Matt Webb, Ben Heelis – coming from open play.
